Introduction
Aim:-This assignment aims to broaden ability to select and visually record from a range of sources in order to communicate information to different audiences.
Melbourne, in South Derbyshire hosts one of
the biggest art festivals in the East Midlands and aims to encourage creativity
in the visual arts. The
Festival supports young and emerging artists by giving them the opportunity to
exhibit at Melbourne Festival and this year we are launching the MELBOURNE
FESTIVAL EMERGING TALENT AWARD. The Award is targeted at artists aged 16 - 25
who are in education or have just left it and interested in a career in Art. It
is aimed at Artists in the East Midlands area.
The Award is part of a programme titled
“Expanding Horizons” supported by an Arts Council England Grant for the Arts
and a local benefactor. The winner will receive £1000, with a runner up award
of £250. All shortlisted entries will be exhibited at the 2014 Festival. The
Festival team will provide mentoring sessions for the winner and a place on the
2015 Melbourne Festival Art & Architecture Trail.
The Brief
The theme “Expanding Horizons” is about reaching
out to the wider communities in Derbyshire and beyond, however the theme is
open to individual and imaginative interpretation.
The piece will be judged on originality, and
imaginative interpretation of the brief. It should be innovative and engaging
and show a high level of technical ability. The work must be of excellent
quality in both materials and application. Students are invited to use the
piece for their current art practice,
provided they can show the work is original for the competition.
STAGE ONE: Artists should apply with
their proposal, including images of previous work and an outline description of
their intentions. This might include sketches or a description as appropriate,
along with CV’s and/or Artist’s Statement and any supporting information.
Deadline: 14th March 2014
STAGE TWO: A selection team will shortlist up to 20 proposals. The
selection process will consider originality, technical ability, interpretation
of the theme and future potential. All
artists will be advised of the selection team decision by 31st March 2014.
STAGE THREE: Invited artists will need to
present their work by 30th
August ready for exhibition on 12th
& 13th September 2013. Artists in full time study will need
to complete work for tutor approval by June
2014, and will be responsible for safe storage of artwork. The delivery and
collection of work is the responsibility of the artist. Artists will be
provided with details of delivery arrangements.
STAGE FOUR: The selection team
will review the final pieces submitted by the shortlisted artists on or before Friday 12th September. The
Melbourne Festival Emerging Talent Award will be presented at 5pm on Saturday 13th September entrants should be available to
attend.
