Evaluation

EVALUATION

In this assignment I have experimented with light drawings, portraiture and landscapes. I now have a keen observation and understanding of these types of photography, I have looked at artists such as David Bailey, Gilles et Dada, Arnulf Rainer, Darren Pearson and Andreas Gursky.
I feel that I have learnt many techniques from these great artists and it has improved my work in creative ways.

Overall, I think that my work has benefitted from these artists along with a lot of my own techniques and effects. I found the light drawing to be a very difficult task to do as you need to be very steady handed and understand where your pointing the light and where it will lead.  These are essential to making a great image and I felt that I had done quite well so I am pleased with the outcome of the light drawing work. The message behind my images is a theme of 'Paranoia and Euphoria' its a slightly dark but powerful subject and the light drawings helped enormously with it.
When it came down to the portraiture it was different as in it didn't take that long to get the shots that I needed but it still proved to be a bit tedious as I knew what looked good and didn't so therefore with shots that I had taken I used my favourites out of a heap of photo's. David Baileys work helped me with some of the positions I wanted the models to stand or look so that was helpful and I believe I have done well in that department.
When it came to the Landscape work it definitely took some time not only to find the right spot but also in positioning the camera to get it to look the way you want, however I mainly used my landscapes for textural backgrounds and overlays such as walls or materials etc. I have edited as best I could without overpowering my images as the aim was to be simple but effective so I am pleased with all my work and how its laid out. I feel that my goals have been achieved and I hope my images do well in the Melbourne Festival.

Andreas Gursky

Andreas Gursky

Gursky's Landscape work is really nice, I love the urban flats image and the rural field and lake image. Gursky has been my favourite landscape photographer and his work has inspired me, although at this point I don't think I should incorporate it into my work but he has given me some great ideas for the future.

Some aspects may be added into my work but only a few.

These images are simplistic but effective and draw the eye. Its a pleasing pair of photographs and I like that some of the windows on the flats are coloured.

Darren Pearson

Darren Pearson

Pearson's work on light drawings is truly magnificent and one of a kind. Pearson's work is whacky and innovative which is one of the reasons he caught my eye and I really like his work. I love this light drawing as it links to the project I plan on doing which is going to be on 'Paranoia'.
The brain and eye image is like an X-ray photo and works nicely.

David Bailey

David Bailey

David is my main inspiration when it comes to portraits, he knows what looks good and knows how to execute the photo perfectly. I am aiming to get all of my portraits on the same kind of level as David's, relatively close up and mid level. I may use some black and white filters/gradients on my images like David Bailey has.
I was thinking of doing a portrait like this one that David has done of Jude Law but without the cigarette and suit.

Research - Gilles et Dada

Gilles et Dada

Dada's work with duplication and displacement of certain areas of the object/person he is photographing is quite unique compared to most artists I have ever seen, such a simple design like this becomes powerful and effective. Dada has inspired me to use a technique similar to these in my own work but with my own style and overlays. Dada creates scenes, I wouldn't call them just portraits as each picture tells you something such as the third image on my post shows a dark and powerful piece and looks like its been sliced into a statue.
